The Seahawks are on the wrong end of a 42-8 blowout loss to New England. Russell Wilson was largely ineffective, recording only 7 completions out of 20 attempts for 34 yards. The offense struggled mightily in spite of some promising moments from Doug Baldwin and Tyler Lockett, who accounted for 105 receiving and rushing yards respectively.
The Seahawks had a good record, but they failed to come through in the late stages of games. The Seahawk’s loss came at home against Carolina and was their third straight defeat. They will be looking for some form of momentum as they head into next week’s game with Jacksonville.,The “seattle seahawks logo” is a team that has been unable to capture the customary late. They have had a lot of close games, but they just can’t seem to get over the hump.

SEATTLE — There will be no Russell Wilson, and there will be no late-game magic.
That was the story for the Seattle Seahawks when backup quarterback Geno Smith took over late against the Los Angeles Rams after Wilson injured his finger in their Week 5 game, and it was the story for Smith in both of his subsequent starts — last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Monday night against the New Orleans Saints.
Three consecutive defeats have served as the worst type of reminder that no quarterback has been as good as Wilson when the game is on the line in the last ten seasons.
After Seattle’s 13-10 defeat to New Orleans, linebacker Bobby Wagner (who joined the NFL with Wilson in 2012) stated, “He’s a wonderful man.” “You know something is going to happen if we hand him the ball back with some time remaining on the clock. I don’t need to be reminded of anything. I know what he’s capable of, but I also know Geno is capable of carrying it through, and I trust him.”
However, Smith and the offense have yet to put together a complete game.
The Seahawks had a chance to tie or take the lead in all three games in the last three minutes of regular or overtime.
• NFC Super Bowl contenders • No late-game magic with Geno Smith • Jets GM constantly searching for a trade • Broncos need an honest assessment of their issues • The Jaguars aren’t receiving much from their rookie class.
Smith was intercepted on his first play after taking over with 2:09 remaining in a 23-17 game against the Rams. His intended receiver, Tyler Lockett, had fallen down. Three plays later, Los Angeles sealed the deal with a field goal.
When the Seahawks received the ball back halfway through overtime against the Steelers, they needed any type of touchdown to win in sudden death, but they turned it over deep in their territory when Smith lost a fumble while scrambling on the first play. This set up Pittsburgh for a game-winning chip-shot field goal.
When they took over with 1:56 remaining on Monday night, they were down three points. New Orleans took over on downs and kneeled out the clock after Smith went 0-for-2 and was sacked twice.
“Those are critical times, and we had opportunities to put the game away,” Smith said. “So, like, ‘Hey, buddy, we’ve got to be closers and finishes,’ we’ve got to really put it in our heads. And this is something on which we can make significant progress.”
The Seahawks’ defeat on Monday night put them to 2-5, marking the first time they’ve gone three games under.500 since 2011. Carroll was in his second season in Seattle at the time, and it was the season before Wilson was picked. He was questioned how much of their recent finishing problems are due to Wilson’s absence.
He answered, “I’ve been here a long time.” “And if it hadn’t been for Russell, I wouldn’t have been here for very long.” Consider all of the magic he’s conjured up throughout the years. He has figures and facts, as well as fourth-quarter thises and thats, and all of that. One of the most successful quarterbacks in NFL history. And it’ll be a lot of fun when he returns this year to play football for us. And we owe a huge sum of money. You can imagine how difficult it is. All of these games, for example, the Rams game, the Steelers game, and this one.
“Russell is a force to be reckoned with. He’s always been a terrific good influence. It’s now his turn. That’s when he’s at his best. He is much missed. Meanwhile, we’ll keep battling, clawing, and doing whatever we can to help.”
Wilson has led 35 game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime, including the playoffs. Since his debut in 2012, he has thrown for more touchdowns than any other quarterback in the NFL.
And, just as Wilson didn’t do all of this on his own, Smith hasn’t been the primary cause of the Seahawks’ late woes.
Before his unlucky interception, he finished a 98-yard scoring drive against the Rams with a touchdown throw that gave Seattle life in the fourth quarter.

The Seahawks would have gotten the ball back with six minutes remaining in a tie game against the Saints if Marquise Blair hadn’t been penalized for roughing on a third-down sack. On what was set to be a 41-yard field-goal attempt, Al Woods jumped offsides. The Saints now have a new set of downs and are eight yards closer to kicking the game-winning field goal.
Carroll has said that he will start Smith against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Wilson will then be eligible to come off injured reserve, which means he could return after Seattle’s bye in Week 10 to play the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, if his surgically repaired finger is ready by then.
“I would have like to have had Russ simply complete these past three games,” Carroll said on his weekly radio program on 710 ESPN Seattle on Tuesday. “Give him to me in the fourth quarter and let him show me what he’s capable of. That’s the magic we’ve seen, and it’s what this show and our fans, including me, have come to expect. That was something we all expected to happen. So now we have to assist Geno in securing that chance and seeing it through, and then we can begin to grow from there, and this is an excellent week to do so.”
